Videotape

by tomlucier on July 6, 2009

Videotape is a band that has a bizarre place in my brain.

Listening to CBC Radio 3, I kept hearing an AMAZING track, day after day, week after week. Every time I heard it, I thought, “Who in the hell is this!?”And each time I would see this band name in the playlist, “VIDEOTAPE”. The song was “Night Lights”. The opening starts slow, building, adding guitar, kick drum, and then, “It’s ok, it’s ok, it’s ok, it’s ok, it’s ok……” and then we’re full on. It’s one of those songs I can listen to at max volume. The voice comes through clear as a bell.

“It’s ok, it’s ok, it’s ok, it’s ok, it’s ok……”

I was wondering why no one was talking about this band, at least not on/in the channels I was consuming.
This band is one of those sets of musicians that I’m never really convinced that we’ll get into Phog. It’s just one of those feelings, “This band smokes…I bet they cost a fortune.”

And then, in my Phog Phest planning stupor, I get this e-mail out of nowhere asking for a Wednesday night before the July 11th madness.

I jumped at it. I could not believe our luck.
This band is coming Wednesday night, and they are going to be AMAZING.
I just wish there was room on the Phog Phest bill (and time in their schedule) to add them to it.
They have one of the more appealing sounds I’ve heard. It will be loud, it will be fast, and it will smoke.
And they’re bringing Sick Friend from Montreal to join the parade. I hope you click their link too, to see what they have in store to make this night a stunner before the HUGE night on Saturday.
And Efan (Stefan C.) is opening for them…solo…which is always one of my favourite local things to hear, especially since he was gone recording FOREVER this Spring.

With this magnanamous event approaching fast, the nerves are alive, and this night will be sure to bring me back to earth…to ground me in what is done best in our little building. Big sounds, big bands, in a little building, for a little crowd, the way this music is most feverishly applauded.

I need this show before Phog Phest. To remind me of what we do well.
To remind me of why we do this.

“It’s ok, it’s ok, it’s ok, it’s ok, it’s ok……”

Phog Phest Tickets – You comin’?

by tomlucier on June 17, 2009

The development of a ticket.

The image you see is ALMOST what we ended up printing as a ticket to the July 11th event…since named Phog Phest.

We put the word out that tickets were on sale at Phog, and they WENT.
A quick description of what’s going on that day.

There is a licensed area for less than 600 people.
For regulars of Phog, you may think this sounds big.
It isn’t.
The show begins at 1pm, with two sets outdoors…then CBC Radio 3 sound checks for the 4 bands on the broadcast (being held from 5pm – 8pm), during which bands will play inside of Phog. At 5pm, the broadcast begins outside, for three hours, which will be followed by sets switching from indoors to outdoors from 8pm until 1am.

With over 20 bands scheduled…there are NOT A LOT OF TICKETS TO GO AROUND for such an epic event.
SO please, if you are a regular, and you want to be in the licensed area…come and get these tickets before they’re gone. The advertising and promotion begins full force next week…and the tickets will be gone before you know it.

Come to Phog, ask for Phog Phest tickets…pass over $15 per ticket, and prepare for an incredible time!

Again, if you want to come for free, in the UN-licensed area…there will be room for you too.
See you there!

A detailed listing of bands and schedules will be released within the week…

Phog Design Challenge…before Radio 3 gets here!

by tomlucier on March 22, 2009

Just a little challenge to our very sharp art-minded customers and supporters.

Kagan McLeod and his brother Sean McLeod (director of Steph Copeland’s new music video) are responsible for the amazing original mural on the side of Phog…the one with the dogs, birds, and woman holding a martini glass…

We have been trying to convince Kagan to come back to his hometown, from Toronto, to design and paint the FRONT of Phog Lounge. He is VERY BUSY, illustrating for almost every major magazine in Canada, and The National Post. He’s a BEAST.

We want our logo and….something…on the front to tell people what we do/are…and we’re stuck.

I think one of the things keeping him back was our inability to supply a design.
So, we’re asking for your help.
There are no prizes.
There are bragging rights if part or all of your design is configured into the eventual painting of the building. You see, according to his brother, Sean, Kagan plans to return to Windsor in early April (SOON) and we need your help before then.

The image at the top of this post is something I recently saw and thought, “Whoa…this is interesting looking, I wonder what Kagan and Sean can do?”

So, if we can supply him with some ideas, maybe we can have a wicked-looking little building form the front for our CBC Radio 3 celebration.

You can e-mail me your ideas or designs at phoglounge@gmail.com or you can simply bring them by the bar ASAP.

- ALSO -
Kagan is not happy with his original piece of art.
So, his condition for doing the front of the building is that he is allowed to erase and redesign PART of the original mural. We’re okay with this. He’s a brilliant talent, and with his brother, will make something outstanding. He wants to remove the woman holding the martini glass…and we can’t say no if he wants to change it…
So, you may want to help re-imagine THAT part of the building also…or, take as many photos of it as you can to remember it the way it is now.

How’d it go?

The music discussion took place.
It’s a darn good thing it did while I was away.
I was delayed by a setback in filming the local cable show The Comic Book Syndicate. Here’s a link to my first appearance on the show.

When I arrived, 90 minutes late, the group (a who’s who of local music, mostly central to Phog) were quietly and contentedly discussing the future of music distribution and its relation to Windsor.

I got there, and with what little voice I had, barfed all sorts of generalizations at the group. This did not go too well, as I was trying to light a fire under their butts, and get a consensus about trying to move this, technologically, together as an entire music community. And in my generalizations, I think many lost sight of my motives, and what I was really trying to say.

However, I took the time to apologize for being a disruption. It seemed, from what I gathered, that the discussion had already been useful and fruit-bearing before I mucked it up. This is very important.

A group of concerned/interested musicians came together to join their ideas and worries about digital media, and how to move onward as an entire musical community. Big benefits to this will be seen if we follow this up with more cool-headed talks and information sessions.

I believe the next thing people were liking the idea of was something similar to Teaching Tech to the Creative Class (TTTTCC). Imagine a place where ALL musicians are invited to observe and listen to self-informed, well researched lecture-styled talks (under 10 minutes each) exploring many different kinds of options facing musicians today who are looking to bypass the cost of printing a CD or wanting to reach a market outside of their own.

Like TTTTCC, there was a bombardment of info, which was subsequently mulled over by attendees, and then picked over for what they could each use. If you are taught how much it costs to get memory sticks, with videos, music, photos, etc., with examples of who has been using this technology, and why they liked and disliked it…along with the similar presentations of MANY other distribution options…you could then CHOOSE which is most appealing, and even mix & match some of these concepts.

I don’t know where this could be held, but I HOPE Phog is too small. It could be a largely appreciated discussion series, and everyone involved would know that they were expanding the minds of MANY Windsor musicians. Possibly sparking the planned evolution of music distribution in Windsor’s music community, putting it in a position of knowledge and influence.

I think the music scene can handle it. I think they deserve this opportunity to lead.
And with the CBC Radio 3 attention still on Windsor music, there is no better time than now to begin exploring these measures.
That’s just my non-jarring, non-disruptive opinion. The one I should have given last night!
